Enabling businesses and communities to create cross-sector partnerships.
Who is Hydrogen South West
We are a business-led infrastructure ecosystem that supports the accelerated production, transportation and use of hydrogen, beyond heavy industrial clusters through connecting people, places and projects.
Our combination of industrial experience, delivery expertise and regional knowledge presents a formidable opportunity to accelerate the UK’s transition to alternative power at scale. By decarbonising transport, commerce and power, we can secure the future of key industries. All while making a meaningful contribution to the UK’s net zero 2050 target.
Our vision
We are striving to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen-fuelled green skills economy, helping to decarbonise our region while creating opportunities for economic growth. We are focused on enabling infrastructure for the production, transmission, storage and off-taker use of hydrogen across the South West.
Why the South West?
With its international connections, world-leading aviation and aerospace sector, and cutting-edge research facilities, the South West is brimming with the talent, resources and connections to make it a perfect home for hydrogen investment.
Linking transport, heat and power
Home to an international port and airport, leading nuclear production, cutting-edge aerospace innovation and some of the country’s biggest utilities companies, the South West is already an import and export hub, making it an obvious choice for the roll-out of hydrogen to all areas of the UK.
Skills and expertise
The region combines world-leading universities with a highly skilled industrial workforce, supported by major employers including Hinkley Point C, Airbus, Leonardo, Rolls-Royce and GKN. There is government investment in the West of England Institute of Technology Hub and the Business West Local Skills Improvement Plan. This enables industry and academia to shape the hydrogen training needed to support the regional economy, formalised through the Hydrogen South West Skills Consortium.
Specialised industry experience
The South West is home to globally recognised brands from the aerospace, engineering and utilities sectors, and the region has a vast range of innovative SMEs that are driving change in these key industries.
Perfectly positioned
Thanks to its geography, the South West is uniquely positioned to connect industrial clusters with a national and international ecosystem. The region connects South Wales, the M4 corridor, the Midlands and the South West of England with shipping lanes and flight paths that extend across the globe.
